what is it
hasty controls is a mod for Haste by Landfall. it adds gyro aiming (looking around by physically moving the controller), rumble support (which has since been built into the game), and extensive controller related settings.
how it came to be
i had been experimenting with adding gyro controls to other games through external tools (steam input, JSM). while these worked great for most games, i ran into problems with haste. this inspired me to try and make a small “patch” mod to fix those specific issues, which quickly evolved into simply adding gyro controls directly into the game.
a lot of research was done into correct gyro implementations, with the main resource being Jibb Smart’s GyroWiki, who also developed the gyro controls seen in Fortnite.
outcome
shortly after release, i got in contact with ivan from FlickStick Videos, who wanted to talk about my development process for a video on his channel.
this drove a lot of traffic to both his channel and my mod, garnering (at the time of writing) 12k unique visitors to the workshop page.
post-release i moved and released all the gyro processing code into a relatively easy to use library: GyroHelpers, which has been used in MadladV’s godot-gyro.
post-mortem
i’m mostly happy with this project, and the fact that it got published at all. if i was to do something differently, i’d try to slow myself down a bit. agility in development is good, but i was at full throttle at all times, to the point it, in my opinion hurt the final product. pushing updates without testing them for long enough, not focusing enough on the actual user experience and improving ui, among other things.
ultimately it served as a good learning experience, and a way of getting my name out there within a niche community.
